Best Bath Mat Guide: Bath Rugs And Mats Your Feet Will Love

Your bath mat makes a big difference to the look and feel of your bathroom. An essential in practical terms, the right mat will absorb excess moisture, keep your feet cushioned and guard against slips after you bathe.

Things like fabric, size, and functional features like washability are all part of your buying decision, but then there’s the aesthetic side of it too. In this blog, we explore the benefits of each type of bath mat, and our top picks to help you find your match.

Different types of bath mats

More than just a place for your feet to land, there’s a bath mat to suit any need and preference. A whole range of materials can be used, but here we’ll focus on the fabric we know best, and that’s cotton. Used in most traditional style mats and rugs, cotton offers durability, softness, absorbency and an aesthetic edge.

To maximise personal comfort and match your room, think about size, thickness,  weight (which is measured in GSM or grams per square metre for cotton), and design.  Thickness and weight are two key factors, as they give each bath mat its unique feel. When it comes to weight, most bath mats in the Christy collection run between 850 GSM to a weightier 2444 GSM.

Heavier mats will likely feel plush and thick, but they may take longer to dry, while lightweight options will be quicker to air and dry out, which is great for high-footfall bathrooms, but they may not feel as indulgent.

Lightweight bath mats

Most lightweight bath mats are made from fabrics like cotton, microfibre or bamboo. These mats are comfortable underfoot, although not as cushioned as their heavier-weight counterparts.

They are easier to dry as we know, but also easier to wash, which can be good if you’re a busy family or have a shared bathroom and need a quick turnaround on your regular wash/dry cycle. When choosing a lightweight cotton bath mat, look for signs of quality to increase durability, which include fabric choice, such as 100% cotton, and design features that show an attention to detail in trims, borders and finishes.

Bath rugs

At the other end of the scale, we have thicker, indulgent bath rugs. These are larger in dimension and usually thicker and heavier. This makes for a sumptuous addition to a bathroom, ideal for slower moments and long soaks in the tub.

Increasing a sense of cosiness and warmth, they can also be used as a design feature on the floor if there’s no need to air over a rail between uses. These are not as practical for bathrooms with a continual flow of traffic and bathers, but they certainly add a design flair.

Christy’s bath mat picks

Our collection of bath mats and rugs has a selection to suit any family and room. From lightweight, smaller-dimension shower mats to standard bath mats and larger rugs, you can find the one to slot into your home. If you have Christy towels in your linen closet, you can match those to a bath mat from the same range or switch it up and find something a little different to add an accent. Here are just three of our favourites to give you a starting point.

Fina Bath Mat

One of our most practical and durable options, the Fina Bath Mat is easy-care, easy to launder and made with our hallmark commitment to quality. Weighing a practical 850 GSM, it dries quickly enough for most family bathrooms but still has a sense of cushioning and comfort. Best of all, Fina has a medley of contrasting weaves, which adds to a textural feel underfoot and gives it supreme wearability. It’s also available in a pared-down colour pallet for a spa vibe.

Renaissance Bath Mat

Just like our best-selling and beloved Renaissance towels, this made-to-match bath mat is designed around everything we’re famous for as heritage towel crafters. 100% cotton of the finest quality and tailored details such as woven borders and headers keep it traditional and luxurious. Weighing 850 GSM and made with the same plush, bouncy cotton, it feels substantial underfoot while still having a functional edge.

Deep Pile Bath Rug

Made for the most indulgent self-care moments, this heavyweight option comes in at 2444 GSM, giving it a super plush and cushioned feel. Crafted with 100% cotton and designed to a generous size, it’s the ultimate accessory for sumptuous bathrooms. Pillowy soft on one side, it has a non-slip backing on the other for a mix of comfort and functionality.

How to wash bath mats

Bath mats are usually heavier and denser than your average towel and need some TLC to stay in top form. Making sure you air them after each use and wash them regularly will help keep them fresh and in top condition. Just like your towels, wash with a colour care detergent and avoid fabric softeners (they reduce absorbency) every 3 days or so in busier bathrooms. For more care tips, check out our guide.
